Improving Access & Office Efficiencies

As part of the transition to a new model of care that includes proactive treatment for individuals with chronic diseases and a greater emphasis on health promotion, FHTs need to find new ways to organize their office processes to free up time for these activities. Improving access - so patients can see their health care provider within 24 hours - and office efficiency are part of the QIIP Learning Collaboratives for Primary Care.

Resources in this section have been divided into two groups, even though they are closely related. The first are resources to improve access, which can lead to "open access" or "same day access". The second group can assist with redesigning systems of care to improve their efficiency and the care patients receive.

Access

The Ontario Health Quality Council has compiled a summary of key references on access. A booklet on advanced access has been prepared by John Oldham in the UK. The Alberta PCI program has produced resources to help improve office efficiency and access. An additional resource is available from IHI.

There are a number of jurisdictions that have developed collaboratives to improve access in the UK, Alberta and British Columbia.

The Ontario Health Quality Council and QIIP offer a series of tools to assist with improving access, including:
