Registered Dietitians

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are Ontario’s nutrition, diet and food experts, uniquely trained to support the nutritional health of the population through evidence-based treatment, disease prevention, and health promotion services.  See the College of Dietitians of Ontario, and Dietitians of Canada.

Nutrition issues arise frequently (20-25% of all visits) in primary care. In FHTs, RDs are responsible for the overall nutrition services, supporting the nutrition work of other providers, as well as providing in-depth nutrition counselling.  Support for this practice model was documented in a multi-disciplinary Delphi process (Brauer P et al. Can J Diet Prac Res 2006; 67: S14-S29).  For more information click here.   RD practice in FHTs continues to evolve, with increasing emphasis on chronic disease management, health promotion, inter-professional and multi-organization initiatives to support community health.
